Global warming is here to stay, or so some experts would have us believe and as we get ready for the Aussie summer in a few months, we thought we’d offer a few tips on how to stay healthy in 35+C temperatures.
- The importance of hydration – Go online and order a couple of Frank Green reusable ceramic water bottles, which keeps the water ice cold. Ideally, you should drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, which would be the equivalent of 3 refills of a 1l ceramic bottle. These amazing water bottles can be purchased as a gift set, which is great for birthdays, Xmas and anniversaries. They come in some amazing colours too!
- Apply sunscreen before venturing into the sun – This is especially important when going to the beach; the breeze conceals the fact that your skin is burning and all it takes is half an hour and you have sunburn. You should apply sunscreen to all exposed parts of the body and if you have kids, make sure they are protected.
- Eye protection – When you buy sunglasses, make sure they are a) polarised and b) have a 400 UV rating. The online shades supplier has top quality eyewear with known brands at wholesale prices, which is a lot cheaper than traditional brick-and-mortar retail outlets.
- Avoid drinking alcohol in the daytime – It is not advisable to consume alcohol in hot weather, as this can lead to dehydration; if you are going to have a drink, wait until the sun goes down and even then, drink moderately, as hot weather can increase levels of intoxication.
- Wear a wide brimmed hat – A baseball cap would suffice but if you are in the sun for long periods, wear a wide brimmed hat with a heck flap, as this protects the back of the head and neck. Girls can use an umbrella to shade themself from the sun, which works every bit as well as a hat.
- The importance of a balanced diet – Of course, this is important all year round, but especially when temperatures soar; we perspire to cool down the body and that means losing fluid and also many of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients. It is wise to take a daily supplement if you are aged 50 or over, as this ensures that you are not lacking in anything.
- Apply coconut oil to your skin – The sun can dry out your skin, which is why you should apply a little coconut oil to keep your skin soft and supple. This doesn’t mean you should apply lots of coconut oil when out in the sun, as your skin would cook!
The weather forecasters are all saying this year, the summer will be a real burner, so don’t get caught out; all of the above should ensure that you remain healthy and hopefully, you will get a nice tan!
